Charadrius

There's a small Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) colony on the way to the hacksite.
Hay una pequeña colonia de chorlitejos colirrojos (Charadrius vociferus) cerca del hacksite.
So I decided to go nest searching... ah, the memories ; )
But it turns out, Killdeer are tougher than Lapwing or Redshank. They run around, letting you get up to a few meters away from them before flushing. This makes it tougher for a predator to distinguish the adult birds from the unfledged chicks and gives the chicks a chance to run away while their parents zig-zag all over the place.
Decidí intentar encontrar algún nido, pero no es fácil. Se dejan acercar bastante, y siempre van corriendo, volando sólo cuando uno se acerca a más de 4 o 5 metros. Así a cualquier depredador le cuesta más distinguir los adultos de los pollos que aun no pueden volar, y les da una oportunidad de escapar mientras sus padres distraen al depredador (o biólogo) correteando de un lado a otro.
Then comes the "I'm wounded, chase me!" display to distract predators.
Entonces llega el comportamiento de simular una herida descolgando las alas para alejar a los depredadores.
But they have another trick... They run a few meters, and sit down as if they were incubating on the nest. You walk up towards them and they run a bit further and do the same. First time I've seen 'fake nesting', haha.
Pero aun les queda un truco más: corren unos metros y se echan, como si estuvieran incubando en el nido. Cuando uno se acerca, se levantan y se alejan cinco o seis metros más y repiten el comportamiento. Así que la primera vez que lo ví pensé: ahí está el nido, esto es fácil! jaja.
Despite everything, I was able to find a nest or two... Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics of the chicks hatching.
A pesar de todo, logré encontrar algunos nidos. A ver si hay suerte y consigo alguna fotillo cuando salgan los pequeñajos.
