Ireland VI: fledging

Stuck in the office these days, but here's one from a month or so ago...

Ireland IV: Merlin!!!

Well, finally got a chance to get a few pics of the sly little... Not brilliant, but they're definately tough subjects. This is a female, the male has a slaty gray back, and creamy orange breast.
Por fin uno de los pequeños... me dió una oportunidad fotográfica. Ésta es la hembra, el macho tiene el dorso de color gris azulado y el pecho de un color crema anaranjado.

Ireland III: merlin grub

The way to survey merlin (according to the books) is to look for signs of their presence first. So basically I go around looking for pluckings (where a merlin has fed on some bird, leaving only the feathers behind). Then when you know where they are hunting, you watch the area for a few hours in the hopes of catching a glimpse of them.
La forma de censar esmerejones es buscando rastros de su presencia. Así que paso el día caminando buscando dsplumaderos, donde un esmerejón se haya alimentado de algún pajarillo, dejando unas cuantas plumas. Luego, cuando sé que zona estan usando para cazar, paso unas horas observando el área esperando poder verlos.

but since it would be kind of gory to stick to that sort of pictures, here's a wheatear, potential merlin grub

and a moth, which is important in their diet previous to egg-laying as it is a good source of calcium
y una polilla, que forma parte de la dieta antes que la hembra del esmerejón ponga huevos, ya que son una buena fuente de calcio

Ireland II: Elusive Little...

Or ELF's for short. That's what merlins are, to put it mildly. Extremely hard to track down and spot. Luckily there's other animals out there which add a bit of distraction to fieldwork.
No traduciré el título, basta con decir que los esmerejones son esquivos y difíciles de encontrar y ver. Por suerte hay otros animalillos por ahí que hacen un poco más amenas las largas horas en el campo.

Back in Ireland again. This time searching for merlins (a small falcon the size of a thrush).
De vuelta en Irlanda, esta vez buscando esmerejones (un halcón del tamaño de un zorzal).

Even if the merlin are hard to find, you can always amuse yourself with the miniature moss and lichen worlds on the ground, on boulders, or on posts...
