South Africa III: snakes

I’ve been very lucky with snakes so far. In the first couple of weeks I saw six different species, two of them deadly.

This is one of them, the puff adder.

Low (the aardwolf and bat-eared fox guy) is also into reptiles and amphibians, so when either of us finds something we bring it home for the other to see, like with this mole snake.

Or this Kalahari whip snake.

O esta culebra de arena del Kalahari.

And lastly, a nice little blind snake. :)

Y para acabar, una culebrita ciega. :)

South Africa II: Dronfield

On one of our few days off we went to Dronfield, a nearby reserve, where we saw loads of neat stuff...

Some funky looking mammals (roan antelope).

Algunos animales un tanto peculiares (antílope ruano).

A couple of vulture species.

Un par de especies de buitres.

And the highlight of the day, white rhino.

Y lo mejor del día, rinoceronte blanco.

Savanna landscape (in IR).

Paisaje de savana (en IR).

South Africa I: the site

It’s nearly a month since I got to Benfontein. It’s an old game farm southeast of Kimberley where they stopped hunting some years back and the place is now used for research. There’s a guy studying aardvarks and bat-eared foxes (real funky-looking but cool animals), there’s a project on weavers, one on black-footed cat, and the one I’m working on. Out on the site, springbok are the most common animals, thou they never let you get too near and bolt off as soon as you’re within a couple hundred meters.

Black wildebeest.

Ñú de cola blanca.

Our ‘backie’.

Nuestro medio de transporte.

There’s a family of ground squirrels living in the yard.

Light lasts for ages after sunset here.

strike another match, go start anew...

Brand new start in a few days time. Different job, place, people, food, culture... Even so, it hasn't yet sunk in that in a week or so I'll be in South Africa. Just starting to get my stuff ready, which should be a wake-up call for my brain . While getting my photography bag ready (the only part of packing that I don't despise) I found a memory card I had 'lost', so I got a chance to edit and develop a couple more pics from DR, and thought I'd upload them. So here they are.

One of the few I have of the hawks in flight. In this one, SN is being mobbed by a gray kingbird.
And one of those things that becomes a part of daily life and you then usually forget to take pictures of. You would always see a few tarantulas when walking through the forest at night, so on one of my last nights in DR I caught one and took it back in the morning to get a few pics with daylight.
And now, writing this up, I am starting to feel the need to go off into the field again, meeting new people and seeing animals I've never laid eyes on before.

Well, kinda late cause I said bye to DR on friday, but it’ll take my brain a few more days to leave the caribbean yet. Guess it's because I travel for work (and due to nerdiness) that I end up photographing and uploading mainly work-related stuff (birds, lizards, plants...). But there's loads apart from wildlife and nature that often leave a deeper mark. This is just a small insight into some of those things...
I really was in the caribbean...
realmente estuve en el caribe...got to see loads of cool sunsets...
puestas de sol impresionantes...
dominicans are some of the happiest and carefree people in the world... when I grow up, I wanna be like them :)
also made friends with people from haiti, ireland, argentina, the us, colombia, korea, peru...
también hice amistad con gente de haití, irlanda, estados unidos, argentina, colombia, corea, perú...stayed up late by the sea, enjoying a bottle of wine til the early hours...

learned that there's actually people who do weirder fieldwork than I do... ;P
and just enjoyed all the small things that make one culture and lifestyle different from another: food, music, humor, weather, sports...

anolis

My work here is finishing, but instead of winding down, I'm busier than ever. The hawks are moving quite far (5km radius round the box), so checking on them takes up a good part of the day. I'm also preparing reports and doing educational chats in the local communities, so I get little time to go out with the camera. But here are some pics of the guys who are lurking everywhere.
This one hangs out in the veranda of the building where I live, and I see him scuttling about every day after lunch.
When feeding the hawks at night, it's cool to see all the anolis sleeping. They find a vine or a big leaf where predators can't get at them and spend the night hanging there.
This one is an old friend. I've been seeing him every other night for the past four months hanging from the same vine along the path I made to the hackbox.
When they're sleeping it's relatively easy to catch them. That's how we got this one, an Anolis baleatus (the largest species on the island).
Relatively easy... Because when I was handling him for the pictures I got a taste of those nastily sharp little teeth (and he wouldn't let go, haha). But shedding a bit of blood was worth it. :)
The cool dewlap.
El saco gular.
He behaved very well, taking into account I kept messing with him, placing him on different branches...
He wouldn't even try running away (this species is actually quite slow when it comes to moving around), but opted for an "I'm not here" approach. :)

of mice and hawks

My tele lens died on me the other day, which, apart from pissing me off extremely, has left me 'handicapped' and wondering how I'm going to solve this problem before going to SA... Anyway, on to brighter topics... I got pets! haha
I've got to trap one of the hawks (trouble with the transmitter) and to do so we use mice (which will survive the trapping, unless the stress gets to them). So now I take care of mice as well of hawks. : )
And I also have another 'pet'... Stumpy, the lizard, who lives in my room. He's quite young but has obviously led a tough life, judging by his stumpy tail. It's hilarious to watch him walk, though, as he wiggles his whole body. :)
And yes, it is hard to see the bat in the last post. In the field it was slightly easier to identify, but more than actually identifying it, I decided that a bat fit what I saw: small, brown fur, with dark gray parts, and it has been recorded as prey in the past. In these crops it's a bit easier to see.
The hawks are doing well. Sin Nombre and Bruce still feed from the rats I leave out for them, but they're on the verge of independence. And Baikal is already fending for herself, and she hasn't been to the box for over a week now. So my work here is nearing its end...
