A few last random pics from SA which I wanted to upload... Algunas fotillos de SA que quedaban pendientes...

Back in Barcelona, but catching up with all the editing and processing of pics, so I’ll be making a few more SA entries. When going out to do night work (to catch, measure, and band the chats roosting in their holes underground) you’d always come across something interesting. Like this scorpion. It’s hard to capture the colour correctly, but that’s what they look like under UV light.
Or this bubbling kassina which just bloated itself when I picked it up.
This is an unsocial south african hedgehog.
Un erizo sudafricano siendo asocial.
But after a while he decided we were harmless.
Que luego decidió que eramos inofensivos.
Snakes were what I looked forward to most at nights. This is a brown house snake. Truth is I did quite well with snakes: saw and handled 10 species in the two and a bit months I was in SA.
One of the highlights of night work (and one of the things I miss most) was sitting on top of the car, spotlighting for eyeshine in the hopes of seeing some of the rare night mammals.
An aardwolf. This one is radiotagged. I know. Lousy pic. But I only took the camera once when I went tracking and was only starting to get the hang of it. Maybe next time...
Un lobo de tierra. Éste tiene collar para seguimiento. Lo sé. Foto mala.
A nice little gecko.
Uno de los simpáticos gecos.
Electrical storms were also common, and quite spectacular to watch.
Las tormentas también eran bastante frecuentes. Y espectaculares.
And this is Rudiger, my pet. You could see solifuges during the day, but the larger ones, like this one (6-7 cm) only came out at night. The picture is kind of blurry cause they’re awfully fast. Which is one of the reasons why I let him go after 5 or 6 days. They eat all the time. Always running around, tackling and eating anything they bump into. And my cricket hunting abilities just couldn’t keep up with his apettite.
So I turned to an easier species. This is Larry, a striped field mouse. They’re incredible. You’d see them scuttling through the veld at night. But when you caught them they were tame as if they’d been born in captivity. After 10 seconds in your hand they’d start washing and then walk up your arm to your shoulder.
Most people come to South Africa to see the mammals, sharks, archaelogical digs, or, soon enough, to go to football matches... I’m a bit more original (not to say kind of stupid) and have come here to stick my head down holes in the ground:
why?
This is a termite nest (in IR).
porque?
Esto es un termitero (en IR).
And this is what it looks on the inside. This is an old and used one where the rain has washed away the surface layers, revealing a bit of the inside.
Well there’s this really weird animal, the aardvark, which feeds on termites. So it goes up to the colonies and bashes them in to feed, usually eating the queen and thus killing the colony. Like at this one.
The aardvark also digs holes in the ground where it goes for underground termite colonies. And there’s also this little brown bird, which lives in family groups, the ant-eating chat, which digs tunnels in those holes to make nests.
Here’s the chat.
Este es el zorzal.
And this is an aardvark hole, with a chat tunnel.
And this is a deranged biologist checking the tunnel to see if there’s an active nest in the tunnel.
I’ve been very lucky with snakes so far. In the first couple of weeks I saw six different species, two of them deadly.
This is one of them, the puff adder.
Low (the aardwolf and bat-eared fox guy) is also into reptiles and amphibians, so when either of us finds something we bring it home for the other to see, like with this mole snake.
It’s nearly a month since I got to Benfontein. It’s an old game farm southeast of Kimberley where they stopped hunting some years back and the place is now used for research. There’s a guy studying aardvarks and bat-eared foxes (real funky-looking but cool animals), there’s a project on weavers, one on black-footed cat, and the one I’m working on. Out on the site, springbok are the most common animals, thou they never let you get too near and bolt off as soon as you’re within a couple hundred meters.
Black wildebeest.
Ñú de cola blanca.
Our ‘backie’.
Nuestro medio de transporte.
There’s a family of ground squirrels living in the yard.
Brand new start in a few days time. Different job, place, people, food, culture... Even so, it hasn't yet sunk in that in a week or so I'll be in South Africa. Just starting to get my stuff ready, which should be a wake-up call for my brain . While getting my photography bag ready (the only part of packing that I don't despise) I found a memory card I had 'lost', so I got a chance to edit and develop a couple more pics from DR, and thought I'd upload them. So here they are.
One of the few I have of the hawks in flight. In this one, SN is being mobbed by a gray kingbird. And one of those things that becomes a part of daily life and you then usually forget to take pictures of. You would always see a few tarantulas when walking through the forest at night, so on one of my last nights in DR I caught one and took it back in the morning to get a few pics with daylight. And now, writing this up, I am starting to feel the need to go off into the field again, meeting new people and seeing animals I've never laid eyes on before.
