growing up...

The best part of this jobs is watching the hawks develop day by day. It's been four weeks since the release, and they're already flying around confidently and moving a bit further from the box daily. A few days ago, one of the hawks actually chased off a turkey vulture that was flying close to their food, and I couldn't help feeling proud of them... : )

This is a pic I took of Baikal this morning...
Está mañana me topé con Baikal...
And an ashy-faced owl (Tyto glaucops), endemic to the island.

This is how I move around...

My children... bad picture, I know, but I have to watch them from a long way off.
There's an osprey that sometimes fishes nearby.
And a night heron at sunset...
Y un martinete al atardecer...

Snake

Found a Blunt-headed Green Treesnake (Uromacer catesbyi) yesterday - or at least that's what I think it is.

Ran into this the other day:
El otro día me topé con esto:
It's an Antillean Nighthawk (Chordeiles gundlachii). The little guy is growing fast and feathers are starting to pop out.

Charadrius

There's a small Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) colony on the way to the hacksite.
So I decided to go nest searching... ah, the memories ; )
But it turns out, Killdeer are tougher than Lapwing or Redshank. They run around, letting you get up to a few meters away from them before flushing. This makes it tougher for a predator to distinguish the adult birds from the unfledged chicks and gives the chicks a chance to run away while their parents zig-zag all over the place.
Then comes the "I'm wounded, chase me!" display to distract predators.
But they have another trick... They run a few meters, and sit down as if they were incubating on the nest. You walk up towards them and they run a bit further and do the same. First time I've seen 'fake nesting', haha.
Despite everything, I was able to find a nest or two... Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics of the chicks hatching.

Release!!!

Finally started the reintroduction. First we had to build the hackbox for the birds.
Por fin comenzó la reintroducción. Lo primero, construir la caja.
Then we disassembled it, and pulled it up onto a tree.
Una vez preparada, tocaba subirla al árbol. And then we brought the birds...
Y llegaron los pájaros...
After fitting them with transmitters we put them in the box. Front to back: Six Nations, Baikal, Bruce, and Sin Nombre.
They spent the first week in the box, during which I was climbing up a few times a day to feed and watch them.
After that the box was opened and they're now flying around the place, but still coming back to feed, and will be doing so for a few months more.
